Director of Benefits 

Job Description

  • Lead the design, implementation, administration, and communication of employee benefit programs
  • Oversee and manage external consultants, brokers, trustees, and service providers
  • Ensure all benefit programs comply with applicable regulations, including IRS and ERISA requirements
  • Develop and maintain competitive, cost-effective benefit programs to attract and retain talent
  • Partner with HR leadership to support and execute Total Rewards strategies aligned with business goals
  • Manage and develop a team of benefits professionals, providing leadership and performance oversight
  • Maintain and build relationships with external vendors, consultants, and actuaries
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations (e.g., COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, healthcare reform)
  • Evaluate, implement, and improve benefits processes for efficiency and accuracy
  • Collaborate with HRIS and IT teams to enhance systems and automate benefits administration
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex benefits issues and process improvements

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or related field required
  • Master’s degree preferred

Certifications

  • HR-related certification preferred (e.g., CEBS, CBP)

Experience & Skills

  • 10+ years of experience managing benefits operations in a complex or multi-entity organization
  • Experience administering retirement plans (401(k), 403(b), pension, non-qualified plans) and health & welfare programs
  • Strong knowledge of benefits compliance, plan design, and implementation
  • Experience with HRIS systems required
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing high-performing teams
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations (COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, ERISA, IRS, DOL)
  • Experience with wellness program development preferred
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and escalate issues appropriately
  • Excellent attention to detail and follow-through
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with computer systems and benefits administration tools
