Position: GPS Technician (Anamosa, IA)
Job Overview:
The GPS Technician supports stringless paving operations by setting up and maintaining total station equipment, establishing and verifying control points, checking grade accuracy, and making necessary adjustments to ensure precise paving execution. This role plays a critical part in maintaining workflow efficiency by ensuring equipment and data systems are properly prepared and functioning ahead of paving operations.
This is a direct-hire position.
• Securely set up and level tripods for backsighting control points.
• Properly assemble, disassemble, and store sensitive surveying equipment daily.
• Perform frequent grade checks throughout projects and communicate findings to the foreman and/or equipment operators to ensure accuracy prior to paving activities.
• Coordinate with paving foreman regarding schedules to ensure all equipment is operational before the crew arrives.
• Interpret paving project plans to determine efficient placement of total stations and control points.
• Read cross-sections within plan sets and perform conversions between inches and tenths of a foot, including applying offsets to achieve correct grade.
• Maintain composure and productivity under tight deadlines and high-demand work environments.
• Demonstrate strong attention to detail to ensure accurate data entry and project information.
• Troubleshoot equipment and operational issues quickly and effectively.
• Manage, track, and upload job files into paving equipment systems.
• Follow all applicable state and federal safety regulations.
• Promote and comply with company safety policies and report concerns to leadership or HR as appropriate.
• Maintain required certifications in accordance with regulatory agencies and company safety programs.
• Collaborate with project managers, construction crews, and government agencies as needed.
• Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with owners, inspectors, the public, and company personnel.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall team operations.
Skills you ideally bring to the table as a GPS Technician…
• Sufficient education or equivalent experience to perform arithmetic calculations and complete written documentation.
• Working knowledge of the construction industry.
• Ability to interpret construction specifications and blueprints.
• Valid driver’s license.
Preferred skills you ideally bring to the table as a GPS Technician…
• Experience with Topcon field equipment and data collection software or 3D paving systems.
• Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D software.
• Degree in Land Surveying, Surveying Engineering, Geospatial Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
