Chief Development Officer

Job Overview: Our Iowa City client, a non-profit organization, is seeking to add a new Chief Development Officer to their team. The Chief Development Officer is responsible for the comprehensive planning, implementation, management and oversight of all development, fundraising, communications, and community relations activities. To be successful in the role of Chief Development Officer, you must have an outgoing personality, understand and stand behind their mission, and bring experience with fundraising.

 

This is a Direct Hire role reporting to the CEO.


What you will be doing as a Chief Development Officer …

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy that includes identifying and cultivating individual, corporate, organization and foundation donors and prospects.
  • Lead and manage all aspects of the fundraising program including major gifts, planned giving, annual fund, special events and grant writing.
  • Develop and implement strategies to raise awareness of the organization’s mission, programs and services to increase visibility and support.
  • Develop and implement strategies to engage and mobilize supporters to advocate for the organization’s mission.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to development staff to build their capacity to achieve fundraising goals in support of the organization’s mission.
  • Develop and implement performance metrics and evaluations tools to ensure the team’s performance meets or exceeds targets and goals.
  • Develop and implement a donor-centered fundraising approach that builds strong relationships with donors, emphasizes the organization’s mission and impact, and encourages donor engagement and investment.
  • Develop and maintain a donor recognition program that celebrates and acknowledges donors’ contributions to the organization.
  • Develop and maintain effective systems and processes to support fundraising and development operations, including cash and in-kind gift processing, database management, and reporting.
  • Develop and implement a fundraising plan that includes clear goals, metrics and timelines.
  • Serve as key member of the executive leadership team, working collaboratively with the CEO and COO to develop and implement the organization’s strategic plan and vision.

Skills you ideally bring to the table as a Chief Development Officer …
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree required with a preferred emphasis in fundraising, marketing, public relations or business.
  • Knowledge of fundraising including development planning, annual giving and major gift cultivation and solicitation. Capital campaign experience a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining an elevated level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with prior experience in public speaking and the ability to represent the organization to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in staff management and mentorship.
  • Computer skills preferred include MS Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and donor database.
